Quzhou Overview
Quzhou lies in western Zhejiang Province and sits on the upper course of the Qiantang River, covering an area of 8,844 square kilometers. It borders four provinces, i.e. Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi and Anhui. It has three counties (Longyou County, Kaihua County and Changshan County), two districts (Kecheng District and Qujiang District) and one city (Jiangshan City) under its direct jurisdiction. Quzhou has a household registered population of 2.55 million. Quzhou is the home of Southern Confucianism and a national historical and cultural city. It has a civilization history of more than 10,000 years and a city-building history of more than 4,000 years. It was listed as National Historical and Cultural City in 1994. Quzhou is the habitual place and second hometown of the descendants of Confucius, and it has been known as the “Home of Southern Confucianism”. The Southern Confucius Family Temple is one of the only two Confucius family temples in China. The story that the woodcutter Wang Zhi meeting the immortal and that his axe handle decayed when he was watching the immortal played Go took place in Mout Lanke in Quzhou. Qingyang Village in Jiangshan has been unanimously recognized as the“Birthplace of the Mao clan in Jiangnan”and Mao Zedong’s ancestral homeland. In 2020, Quzhou was listed as the sixth batch of “National Civilized Model City” with the outstanding achievements. The city brand of “Quzhou, Home of Southern Confucianism, A Model City of Virtue”ranked 29th in the 2024 Comprehensive Brand Influence Index of Chinese Prefecture-level Cities. Quzhou is a beautiful city at the source of Qiantang River, with lucid waters and lush mountains. The city’s forest coverage rate is about 70%, and the quality of outbound water remains above the level of Class II. Qianjiangyuan National Park is the only national park system pilot in East China, and Jianglang Mountain is the first World Natural Heritage in Zhejiang. It is an important ecological barrier in Zhejiang, a national ecological demonstration area, a national garden city, and a national forest city. It was awarded “International Garden City” by The United Nations, The City of Longevity in the World, and National Ecological Civilization Construction Demonstration Zone. Quzhou is Chin’s Excellent Tourism City and the first pilot national recreation area. There are 2 national AAAAA level scenic spots and 14 national AAAA level scenic spots. Quzhou has pioneered the carbon account system and promoted the reform of “Two Mountains Cooperative” throughout the city. Constructing “The Model City of Virtue” Poetry and Painting Scenic Belt, Quzhou has become one of the first practice and innovation bases of “Lucid water and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, a national pilot zone for green financial reform and innovation, and one of the National Forestry Carbon Sink Pilot Cities. Quzhou is a city of openness, bordering four provinces. It has always been a boundary transportation hub and material distribution center for the four provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, and Anhui, renowned as “a thoroughfare leading to four provinces”. Quzhou enjoys a convenient transportation by air, water, rail and road. Its civil aviation directly reaches 25 cities. It has four expressways, Hangzhou-Jinhua-Quzhou expressway and Hangzhou-Xin’anjiang-Jingdezhen expressway run horizontally, and Huanshan-Quzhou-Nanping expressway and Longyou-Lishui expressway run vertically through the city. Zhejiang-Jiangxi railway, Hangzhou-Changsha high-speed railway, and Quzhou-Jiujiang railway traverse the entire territory. It offers direct access to Shanghai and Ningbo Zhoushan ports for 1,000-tonne vessels. The Hangzhou-Quzhou high-speed railway to be put into operation in 2025 will shorten the commute time between Quzhou and Hangzhou to about 41 minutes. Quzhou deepens the “integration of Hangzhou, Ningbo and Shanghai”, fully blending into the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the integrated development of Yangtze River Delta. Quzhou cooperates with Huangshan, Nanping and Shangrao to build the Zhejiang- Anhui-Fujian-Jiangxi (Quzhou-Huangshan-Nanping-Shangrao) Union Garden, and with Shangrao to build the Zhejiang-Jiangxi Border (Quzhou-Shangrao) Demonstration Zone. Quzhou has been approved as a free trade linkage innovation zone and a cross-border e-commerce pilot zone, and is in the process of applying for the construction of a comprehensive bonded zone. In 2023, Quzhou was listed as one of China’s Top 100 Cities in Foreign Trade for the first time. Quzhou is a city of vitality, integrating “five chains”. It adheres to the strategy of “enhancing city with industry and prospering city by industry”, promoting the integration of “five chains”, i.e. industrial chain, innovation chain, talent chain, capital chain, and service chain, and focusing on the six iconic industrial chains, i.e. new materials, new energy, integrated circuits, intelligent equipment, life and health, and special paper. Since 2021, Quzhou has introduced 13 manufacturing projects with an investment of more than 10 billion yuan, cooperated with Zhejiang University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Fudan University and other prestigious universities to build high-energy innovation platforms, and introduced five teams of academicians. With a fund size of more than 75 billion yuan, Quzhou was ranked 69th on the list of the top 100 cities with innovative capacity and 50th on the list of the top 100 most attractive cities for talents in the country, and its value-added reform of government services was awarded the gold prize of the Provincial Reform Breakthrough Awards. |
