Commemoration of Confucius, a folklore event popular in Quzhou, is one of the national intangible cultural heritages. In the second year of Jianyan (A.D. 1128) of the Southern Song Dynasty, Kong Duanyou, the Yanshenggong, the first grandson of the 48th generation descendants of Confucius, went to Yangzhou to accompany the emperor to perform the sacrificial rites at the order of Emperor Zhao Gou, and then took the tour to the south. In the third year of Jianyan (A.D. 1129), he came to Quzhou, and was ordered to commemorate Confucius by the imperial decree of “taking the state school as the temple”, thus starting the activity of commemorating Confucius with Quzhou characteristics. Commemoration of Confucius has continued in Quzhou for more than 800 years, and was interrupted once after 1949. In 2004, it was restored on the initiative of Kong Xiangkai, the first grandson of Kong Duanyou. On 28 September, Quzhou restarted commemoration ceremony of Confucius. All participants in the ceremony wear modern clothing and perform modern rituals, and the whole process takes less than 40 minutes.
