In the Wutong Ancestral Hall in Jiuhua, Quzhou, there is a custom of welcoming the spring god on the Beginning of Spring. The Beginning of Spring is the time of the temple fair at the Wutong Ancestral Hall where the god of spring, Jumang, is worshiped. As the saying goes, “Spring Festival is not as important as the Beginning of Spring." Jiuhua’s Celebration of the Beginning of Spring is a traditional agricultural seasonal custom that has been preserved relatively well in Waichen Village, Jiuhua Township, Kecheng District, Quzhou. The Beginning of Spring on the lunar calender is the day of celebration, Jiuhua Wutong Ancestral Hall is the main place where activities take place. The main rituals include: Worshiping Jumang, welcoming spring and receiving blessings for a good harvest, offering sacrifices, dressing up as Jumang, burning incense to welcome the god, binding spring oxen, performing plays to honor the god, taking spring outings, and whipping spring oxen, etc.
